Tunthungkamu: The Story of the Totos
An immersive, 7-day journey into the life, heritage, and identity of one of India’s smallest Indigenous communities.

Through hands-on workshops, curated trails, storytelling sessions, and one-on-one interactions with Toto knowledge keepers, this program offers an unfiltered window into the world of the Totos — their oral histories, animistic traditions, land-based wisdom, and ongoing struggles for cultural revival and land rights.

The experience culminates in a vibrant 2-day community festival — a space for music, food, art, and ancestral knowledge — fully designed and led by the Toto community. Women run a traditional farm-to-table café, youth guide visitors through heritage trails, artists bring ancestral stories to life through murals, and elders share centuries-old wisdom.

By joining this journey, you’re not just learning — you’re contributing to a larger movement for cultural preservation, indigenous leadership, and community-based tourism. A portion of the program’s revenue also supports the building of new classrooms at CTMEC, the only school in Totopara dedicated to teaching the Toto language and culture.

The Story of the Totos — a 5-day immersive and experiential learning journey into one of India’s smallest Indigenous communities, followed by a 2-day festival celebrating Toto culture, heritage, and identity.

Through thoughtfully curated interactions, hands-on activities, and immersive explorations, participants will:
- Listen to ancestral oral narratives and history
- Understand rituals, animism, and shamanism in their authentic form
- Explore the Toto relationship with land, forests, and rivers
- Share in a one-of-a-kind community festival celebrating music, food, crafts, and resilience

Organized by the Chittaranjan Toto Memorial Education Centre, with the support of Pipilitara Foundation, Muhaan, the Toto Young Group, the Toto Bachelor Group, and the Toto community, this program offers a rare opportunity to experience culture directly from the community, while contributing to a broader movement of cultural revival and community-based tourism in Totopara.

This year, Siang District Tourism, Muhaan, the Solung Committee, and the community of Pangin village came together to celebrate Solung in a way that stays close to its roots. The festival wasn’t just about being zero-waste, but about reviving the essence of a community celebration. Plastic cups were replaced with bamboo ones, epum and ejuk were used to serve only apong, and local artist Sammuel hand-painted a cloth banner. The stalls and gate were made with bamboo and toko leaves, giving the festival a natural, traditional aesthetic. Binyat was performed in a more ritualistic, collective way, and an open museum showcased Adi lifestyle, from agriculture, attire, and mithun to traditional weapons. Traditional games like tug-of-war and archery were revived, while workshops in paper-making and eco-printing by Ushimi Linggi @inklinklinggi engaged kids and women. The festival also bridged the gap between youths and elders, with Pangin’s young people showcasing their talent in dance and music during the Solung musical evening. Muhaan invited tourists from Bangalore, Assam, and nearby areas to give the community practical experience in hosting guests and to allow visitors to experience the rich culture of Solung and the Adi community firsthand. School students also visited to learn about culture and zero-waste practices.

Together, this collaboration made Solung 2025 a celebration rooted in culture, community, and sustainability.

The call has gone out! Gaon Buda Galong Taki signals Solung’s arrival, and Pangin starts its preparations with Apong.

The Adis of Siang welcome the festival of Solung with rituals that carry the weight of generations. The call for the festival is not made with loudspeakers or posters, but through the age-old tradition of Gokying.

On this day, the Gaon Burah of Pangin, Shri Galong Taki, sets out on foot. Moving from house to house, he calls upon the villagers to ready themselves for Solung. His message is clear yet symbolic - it is time to begin brewing Apong, the rice beer without which no festivity is complete. The fragrance of fermenting grains soon fills the air, marking the beginning of days of togetherness, song, and ritual.

In capturing these living traditions, the story of Solung is being documented by the office of the DTO, Siang district in collaboration with Muhaan.

The 4th edition of Living with the Forests
Community, connection, and the quiet wisdom of the forest.
Though nestled deep in the folds of Neora Valley, the villages of Chumong and Tangta gave us more than we could have ever imagined. Welcomed like family, we were immersed in stories, songs, silence, and soul-stirring food — from Kirati to Bhutia traditions, each meal told its own tale of the forest.
This edition was a shining example of true community-based tourism — held together by the spirit of the people. A heartfelt shoutout to the brilliant youths of Todey — Ignesious Rai @gods_will_believer , Arnold Rai @arnoldlifestyle6832 , Isaac Rai @issac_saharaja , Martin Rai — who led the way with dedication, warmth, and pride. Their return to the village marks a powerful movement of reverse migration, rooted in purpose and possibility.
Deep gratitude to Nirmal Tamang and his family — our resource person and anchor throughout — whose unwavering support, hospitality, and wisdom brought so much heart to the experience.
To the generous and kind-hearted community of Chumong, thank you for opening your homes, sharing your stories, and walking this journey with us. From forest foraging and nettle fiber craft with Dilkumari Rai, to long conversations at Ai Pem Laden’s 200-year-old Bhutia Heritage House, and teachings from Lako Wangdi Bhutia, Head Lama of Tangta Monastery — every moment felt sacred and full of meaning.

Meet Jas Bahadur Rai, the last practicing dhami (shaman) of Todey Tangta, West Bengal. For over six decades, he has served as a spiritual guide and healer, carrying forward ancestral wisdom rooted in nature. Initiated at 13 through a dream and trained in Bhutan, his life is a testament to a fading tradition where shamans once bridged the human and natural worlds.
As modernity grows, these ancient ways risk being lost—yet they hold deeper truths about how we once listened to and lived with nature.

Meet Our Knowledge Keeper | Nirmal Tamang
From the quiet village of Chumang in Todey-Tangta, Nirmal Tamang began crafting with his hands at just 12—watching elders weave and carve, learning by observing, experimenting, and creating.
Today, he is a self-taught artisan who not only makes bamboo baskets, wooden stools, flutes, and tungnas—but brings them to life with his music and stories.

What began as childhood curiosity has grown into a lifelong journey of preserving traditional knowledge through everyday art.

" Standing on the shoulders of giants "
After initiating the Zero Waste effort at Gorsam Kora last year, we found ourselves once again drawn to this sacred valley—almost as if the Stupa itself pulled us back. There's a deep spiritual connection we feel with this land, its people, and its stories.

With very little time and resources, and guided by the steady leadership of Lama Kesang and Degin Dorjee, we moved forward with a shared vision: to shape Gorsam Kora not just as a festival, but as a space for reflection, learning, and pride for the people of Pangchen.

From setting up a small but powerful exhibition on Pangchen’s cultural heritage, to designing subtle lighting for the Gorsam Chorten—with implementation support from the Indian Army and designing the event area —we focused on blending gently with the existing environment, rather than standing apart from it.

A special thanks to Priyamwada Chettri @priyamwada_chettri for stepping in at the last moment and bringing the visual stories of Pangchen to life through her illustrations. And to Harshita Borah @harshita_borah , for helping shape the panel designs just in time. Brother Sasank Shresta @sasankshrestha_021 for helping us with the high quality cloth banner prints. Alifa @_alifa_zibrani_ for her spirit and helping us in whatever ways she could.

From tending cows and sheep to navigating the changing landscapes of Neora, his life is a testament to resilience, deep ecological knowledge, and a vanishing way of life.

Once free to roam the forests with his animals, today he witnesses how shifting forest regulations and disappearing traditions reshape his connection to the land.

Built in the early 12th century by the revered Monpa monk Lama Pradhar, Gorsam Chorten stands as a timeless symbol of faith and cultural heritage. Inspired by Nepal’s Boudhanath Stupa, legend says Lama Pradhar was so mesmerized by its design that he carved a miniature model of it from a radish before recreating it in Pangchen.

Each year, the Gorzam Kora Festival brings thousands of pilgrims and visitors from Arunachal, Bhutan, Nepal, and beyond—uniting faith, tradition, and celebration at this sacred site.

Pangchen, or Pangchen Dingro, meaning The Land of No Sin, embodies the deep-rooted Buddhist values of its people. The valley comprises six hamlets—Zemithang, Lumpo, Muchat, Kharman, Kelengteng, and Soktshen. 2024 was a milestone year for Muhaan—filled with achievements, collaborations, and deeper community engagement. From being recognized for our work in climate action & sustainable tourism to pioneering zero-waste events and fostering new running communities, each initiative brought us closer to our vision.
- We were honored to be selected for Changelooms 2024 by Commutiny @commutiny__ and to receive the Global Community Tourism Fund for our Living with the Forests program.
- We took bold steps in sustainable tourism—taking the initiative with WWF , Further and Beyond , and Zero Waste Himalaya to make Gorzam Kora into a zero-waste festival, hosting Duhumbi Heritage Fair, and executing the first Zero Waste Duars Run.
- The Kalimpong Freedom Run grew bigger than ever, introducing Samsing as an adventure tourism spot, while the impact of our past runs led to the rise of Jaldhaka Runners—a thriving running community of 1,000+ members.
- Through Asaar Pandhra, Parengtar became a model for community-based tourism, inspiring visits from other villages under WWF Darjeeling’s initiative.
- At Tunthungkamu Festival, we worked with Alipurduar District Administration & Tribal Development Dept. to strengthen community-led tourism in Totopara, including guide training for local youth.
- And we wrapped up the year with one of the best editions of Kholeydai Festival—a true testament to the power of partnerships, cultural exchange, and shared dreams.

Introducing Living with the Forests - The Knowledge Keepers
Meet Dawa Tamang, a Knowledge Keeper from the serene village of Soureni in the Eastern Himalayas. Growing up amidst the rich biodiversity of the Neora Valley, Dawa inherited the art of stingless beekeeping—a tradition passed down through generations in his 43-household community.

Soureni’s unique stingless honey isn’t just a livelihood; it’s a connection to the land, a testament to harmony with nature, and a treasure of medicinal value.

This is the first in our series documenting the invaluable wisdom of Knowledge Keepers like Dawa—custodians of ecological, cultural, and ancestral heritage from forest and fringe communities. Their stories remind us that sustainable living is rooted in tradition and harmony.

The first day of The Bridge to Mayal Lyang has been nothing short of magical. This is what Manisha of Tag Along @tagalongbackpackers had to say about her experience-
It felt as though we were all flowing, slowing down, and peacefully embracing the beauty around us. The uphill walk through the forest trail to the Tashi Choling Monastery was filled with joy, led by little Punsan and Maverick, whose enthusiasm inspired us to keep moving forward. Watching their energy and excitement gave us the strength to tackle the uphill trail.
We laughed, sang songs, and listened to the melodies of the birds that greeted us as we entered the trails slowly and mindfully. It felt like we were one with the forest, one with the mountains, and one with everything around us.

For centuries, the Totos have embraced essentialism in their habitat, creating a way of life where every element of their settlement serves a purpose, blending harmoniously with nature.

As globalization begins to impact their culture, lifestyle, and environment, the Documentation Program seeks to document and understand this unique relationship between their built and unbuilt landscape. A Journey of Rediscovery: Tuthungkamu Festival 2024 Recap"

The Tuthungkamu Festival 2024 has opened a new chapter in community-based tourism and cultural conservation in Totopara. This year, the festival became a significant platform for the Toto people, allowing them to delve deeply into their culture, traditions, and values while engaging the youth in meaningful ways.

A Toto Cultural Guide Training Program held prior to the event empowered 12 promising young Toto guides, who successfully led esteemed guests through a newly inaugurated village trail. The trail, inaugurated by the District Magistrate of Alipurduar, showcased traditional Toto homes, farms, and the community's natural beauty, culminating in an outdoor lunch of authentic Toto dishes, prepared by a local women's group at a stunning Bhutan viewpoint.

Visual artists from the Toto community brought their creative visions to life by painting murals inspired by the past lifestyle of the Totos, while master craftsman Dulal Toto demonstrated his remarkable bamboo craftsmanship live. The festival also highlighted the collaborative efforts of O.E.P @office.of.emergent.practices from Tezpur, whose detailed study on Toto architecture and habitat was beautifully showcased.

Beyond Toto culture, the festival was a celebration of the tribal heritage of the Duars region, with stunning performances by the Koch Rabha and Meche communities. Designed as a zero-waste event, the festival relied entirely on natural materials, paying homage to the eco-conscious lifestyle of the Totos.

Organized by the Chittranjan Toto Memorial Education Centre, in collaboration with Muhaan, Piplitara Foundation, Toto Young Group, and the entire Toto community of Totopara, the event saw distinguished visitors, including the District Magistrate of Alipurduar, Additional District Magistrate, BDOs of Madarihat and Falakata, Raja Banerjee of Rimpocha, and many more.

The 2nd edition of Tuthungkamu Festival was not just a celebration; it was a transformative moment for the Toto community, creating new pathways for sustainable tourism, cultural conservation, and youth empowerment.
