The Lepchas

The Lepchas are the indigenous people of Sikkim, Darjeeling, and parts of eastern Nepal and Bhutan, often referred to as the “Children of the Snowy Peaks.” They are considered one of the oldest communities in the Eastern Himalayas, with a rich history deeply intertwined with the natural landscapes they inhabit.

In Lepcha tradition, their origins trace back to Mayal Lyang, a mythical paradise believed to be the sacred land created by their guardian deity, Itbu Rum. Known for their profound respect for nature, the Lepchas have lived in harmony with the environment, preserving their lands and biodiversity for generations.

Their unique language, Rong, is part of the Tibeto-Burman family, and their oral traditions, folktales, and spiritual beliefs emphasize coexistence with the natural world. From their distinctive attire and bamboo crafts to their traditional songs and dances, the Lepchas celebrate their vibrant cultural identity while adapting to modern challenges.
